windeh

So it's not really the worst thing in the world that Charlie's out of commission right now, considering the weather this weekend is a tad.... demented.

this gif is real time, not sped up, i promise. it also represents the actual constancy of this crazy wind.
In a way I'm kinda weirdly grateful for the wind bc it will hopefully dry the ground up a little bit from the excessive rain and wetness of late.

charming arch? or death trap? you decide!
But then again.... Around this part of the country, high winds = downed trees = power outages. Lots and lots of power outages. Traffic lights. Homes. Businesses. And, turns out, Farms too.

this tree appears to have somehow actually missed the fence
Charlie's barn is apparently all on the same circuits, even including the private residences on the property. This also means that all water pumps and heaters are out too, tho luckily the property has a fair amount of natural water features like springs and streams. Not all pastures or barns communicate with this natural water tho so it definitely makes watering all the horses trickier.

aaaaaaand yea we're gonna need a different path to charlie's barn lol
Charlie certainly doesn't seem to care tho haha. Naturally, after I braved the gusts and traffic and downed trees to tend to his beckoning abscess..... Naturally I was confronted with the lack of power and hot water. So, uh, no soaking for you this time, Chuck.

dear trailer, plz survive, mkay?? no branchey-falley-nonsense, yes?
He didn't mind tho. Actually he was walking just fine on all four, so maybe even tho I couldn't find any evidence of a blowout, maybe he's already on the mend?? Figures that he'd be feeling better just in time for the rest of the farm to be thrown into disarray lol.

It's cool tho. I'll take what I can get. And at least Charlie is pretty nonchalant about the wind too. Actually this wind reminds me of my first ever riding lesson with Charlie, on another stupidly windy with shit literally blowing down and around us as we trotted around.

He didn't care then and doesn't care now. I'm cool with it haha. Meaning, if he does somehow end up feeling sound this weekend, you better believe I'm climbing aboard. Gusts or no lol.

Hope you all are having better weather haha. If it's windy where you are, will you be riding too? Or holding out for better conditions?

  1. we had a huge tree come down on our wires last nite and across our drive. power out for about 2 hours. crazy. The good thing is that the City of Newark came in like five minutes later and started cutting it up. Now we have a monstrous pile of wood and branches in our yard and no idea what to do with it. UGH. This wind was horrible. Glad all seemed to make it thru okay and I didnt even think about my trailer. I hope no trees went down at our barn.

I hope Charlie continues to improve!

    1. Oh man I'm glad the tree didn't hit anything else and that the city was able to clean it up so fast!! We had tons of city officials and police officers mobilized yesterday (literally everywhere) so hopefully they're being equally quick to clear things up? My neighborhood doesn't have a ton of trees so I'm lucky, but our barns are.... A different story.

  2. I rode Xhimi yesterday in the wind and he behaved himself! I was really surprised and ready for some snorty prancing but he couldn't be bothered… I'll take it!!!! Today we're supposed to go over to a little schooling show and do some jumper rounds so we'll see if Chimi's nonchalant attitude continues around other horses that might not share his feelings about the wind :)

Glad to hear Charlie seems better! Fingered crossed he stays on the up and up!

    1. Ooh have fun at the jumper show!! I hope it's not too windy there lol. Last time I went to an event in extreme high winds they had a hell of a time keeping the jumps up. Like, literally the horse would be cantering down to the fence and it would just ... fall. Naturally spooking the horse in the process lol.

    3. Ok after accidentally clicking publish when I hadn't finished typing... here's round two ;)

It ended up being a good day! Not to windy but enough to keep the ponies from sweating to much in their winter coats :) And yeah I've been to a show before that the jumps were being blown down!!! It makes the judges life a bit harder, was it the wind or the horse that knocked that jump over? hummm....

  3. Happy Charlie is feeling better! He certainly picked a great time to be off though. Hopefully he continues to feel better and this crazy weather starts to improve! Hopefully power is back on the farm soon too. I hate not having water!

    1. Yea my fingers are crossed for restored power soon. The folks who have been there a long time don't seem worried but as someone who spends mostly evenings there, lights would be nice!!

  4. We had crazy winds then snow. Now, the downed things are melting off and you can see what actually fell. Though not as bad as where you are, the weather this spring seems to just be wild!

  5. Essentially the entire area north of OF was out of power, too. I generally support the whole 'stay home and let BGE do their thing', but with no power and the grill strapped down so it didn't fly away, hubby and I had to go out in search of food. The whole town was dark except the little strip by The Mill. Fortunately the brewery had a food truck!

    1. Ugh what a mess. I noticed a ton of traffic lights were out too. Glad you got to enjoy some food truck goodness but I hope your power comes back asap!!

  6. It's a little breezy here today, but nothing like out where you are -- wow! Glad Charlie is walking on all fours 😀

    1. Every time I see Charlie and he has four legs he gets a treat. Then another treat if he also has four shoes. And then another if he is weight bearing all the way around. I swear he's not spoiled tho lol

  7. I can't decide if I would prefer the wind or the massive snow storm we are having right now!

    1. Me too - I keep thinking our weather sucks, then I see the torrential rain or big wind storms, and think maybe a bit of snow isn't so bad. It can go anytime though. It feels like it's been cold forever.

    2. Yea honestly I would prefer the wind. So done with winter over here, tho we didn't get tons of snow this year. But the ground has been so wet for so long that I much prefer the drying wind to any more precipitation! Hope your storms pass quickly tho and that spring and warmer weather are around the corner!

  8. Ugh...fingers crossed your trailer makes it through unscathed. Glad Charlie is healing up and I’d be getting on him to if he was sound regardless of Armageddon was upon us.

    1. Trailer was fine as of yesterday so fingers crossed lol. And yea. Agreed 1000% about riding even if it were Armageddon. I'm feeling pretty determined lol

  9. No riding for me. The wind is terrible.

  10. Seems like March has been crazy everywhere! We had a giant snow storm.. maybe better than wind? I dunno...

  11. Whoa, I had heard that y'all had a pretty rough storm. Hope there wasn't any terrible damage - glad you're all okay
