a reader poll: helmet bling

So by now most readers (or readers since my last event in early October) know that I have a helmet camera. And it's awesome sauce - best present I ever bought myself ever, highly recommend! (And thanks Carly for sharing details about yours so I knew what to look for!).

(Also, for those of you into that kind of thing, the helmet cam label will direct you to posts with all the videos from the camera, typically events and xc schooling shenanigans)

a match made in heaven
Attaching the camera proved tricky and I ultimately purchased a One K skull cap (conveniently on sale at the time from Tack of the Day) so that the adhesive mount could be permanently affixed. So far, so good, right? But I didn't love the look of the brimless skull cap on me, so the last piece of the puzzle was a helmet cover.

i love the color. the competing logos tho? not so much
Turns out that finding a helmet cover in navy (without going the cu$tom route) was trickier than I anticipated. Finally tho, I found CO's covers online at Dover. Awesome. The color is perfect too. One problem tho - the pics online did not include that massive logo in bright silver stitching. And isn't it kinda blasphemous to have two different helmet company logos right next to each other?!?

wild patch
So I began my search for some sort of patch to cover up the CO logo, ending with this crazy weird beauty from eBay (which, btw, that store has a zillion different awesome patches if you ever are inclined in that direction). As soon as I saw it online I knew it had to be mine. I mean, that wild mane, the tail flick, the mare glare and tossed head? It's Izzamonster!

cat for scale
But.... then I kinda got cold feet about it and never affixed it to the helmet. Idk. I kinda like a simple, universal and classic look - neutral colors and no logos when possible. So I colored over the CO logo's silver thread with black sharpie and called it good enough.

typical competition look. CO logo jusssst barely visible
Lately tho I've been rethinking it. The logo itself isn't really obvious ever in pics, and would the patch be that much different? And Isabel really truly is kinda a bad ass event pony, so maybe that patch would add to the picture rather than diminish or distract? Idk.

What do you think? Or do we need pics of what it could potentially look like?

Patch or No Patch?

  1. I am a patch fanatic, I say go for it. I like to decorate things and make them uniquely mine. A gopro is on my christmas list so that I can capture my rides. Not sure if santa is bringing it though. You and your pony are lookin good out there on the xc course!

  2. You can always tack it on first use it for a bit and then decided if you want it to be a permanent affaire.

    1. that's likely what will end up happening - the helmet cover material probably won't stand up to getting ironed, so i'll be sewing it on anyway. and just a few preliminary stitches ought to be enough to decide whether to continue or not

  3. I like the simple clean look as well. Then other times I go off the rocker and go cray af. So... I'm unreliable in my opinion! (I voted just yes on patch)

  4. In theory I say YES to the patch! But since I always like to look at things a million times over I voted Maybe (with a high leaning towards YES!!!!) Love the patch you found! What a cool way to add personality on xc!

  5. I voted maybe. I can see it either being perfect, or leaning towards either crazy old spinster cat lady that loves brocade or small child that loves sparkles fuck the rest of the world. Probably perfect though because I love me some random bling.

  6. Definitely need pictures first. However, if you're hesitant about putting it on, then maybe you aren't all that in love with it on the cover and it could go on something else?

  7. Patch.

    When in doubt, stand out.

Cough says the girl with an avengers logo on her horse, a race noseband on her bridle, and a sparkle browband on EVERYTHING. Hunters hate me, but I'm having too much fun to care.

  9. Let's see pics of the Sharpie fix first, then decide: to patch or not to patch.

    1. the sharpie fix isn't a very good one. it dulled down the brightness of the silver thread a bit, but it's not nearly as dark as i had hoped it would get

  10. Voted yes because it's awesome

  11. I'm like you- minimal bling, but I think it would really add some spark!

    1. that's what i'm hoping. originally i thought it would stand out too much, but the logo itself really doesn't so maybe the patch won't either?

  12. I voted for the patch. Totally adorable and badass, which I think sums you guys up pretty well as a team.
Any reason why you went for that camera rather than a go-pro?

    1. i got the contour based on the recommendations of other bloggers (it's the type the Carly has). i also prefer the more streamlined look of this camera compared to the gopro, especially that it sits on the side of the helmet rather than in front or on top. plus it was a better fit for my budget.

  13. Love the patch but think pics of placement etc first will deff help tip the scales from maybe to a more definitive answer ;-)

  15. I vote yes. Unless you come up with something else you want to do with the patch. You bought it so I say use it.
