mucky field is mucky

Isabel got her tootsies did this week and I took advantage of the opportunity to squeeze in a sunset ride afterward.

Izzy was kind of rude for the farrier - mostly good riiiiight up until he'd start tapping the nails back in. Then she'd just slowly start leaning backwards, like he wouldn't notice that huge shift in her weight... C'mon mare - just stand please?

'nah, i'd rather not, thx' -isabel

She was then a little perplexed as to why she had to work AGAIN after enduring the whole trauma of standing for 25 minutes for the trim and reset. Poor thing!

This was my first attempt at a non-trail ride at the farm in over a month. And it was kind of a bust. Our arena is still unrideable, so we tried the field. There's a roped off 'temporary arena' that's already completely trashed... and most of the other areas are either too hilly given how slippery it is, or kind of marshy/boggy.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but the ground is pretty frozen, making the uneven choppy mud kinda treacherous.

So we just walked. I kinda expected Isabel to be somewhat witchy, given her attitude to the farrier, and then some shenanigans at the mounting block (ughhhh)... but she was fine.

All the same, tho, we kept it really short. I wasn't overly optimistic about the footing when we headed out there, yet I still somehow ended up disappointed. Since she was so willing to do nice things at the walk (despite so much mud - the HORROR), I just called it a day after a few laps.

Then we spent a little more time on Isabel's favorite activity EVAR - grazing. There's almost no grass at all... but she still loves it so I humor her haha. Whatever keeps the mare happy, right?

  1. Horses make me laugh when they HAVE to eat all the grass even though there is hardly any growth...although methinks it's something to do with new grass being sweetest - but I'm prob wrong cos I know nothing (Jon Snuh)

  2. Ugh, I could go on about this weather. I will admit that Baby is the same and will drag me places if I don't pay attention. It's always an adventure.

  8. Yeah my barn is kind of icy/muddy all over the place. I was excited to be back because I liked riding on the grass outside of the indoor but it's too treacherous for us right now.

    1. yea... it gets really bad when the top layer softens and thaws, but there's still ice underneath... hopefully the weather improves soon!

    1. isabel can spot a succulent blade of grass from 20 paces, i'm sure of it. we'll be riding around the woods where everything is brown brown brown, and she'll suddenly stop and reach for the *only* fist-sized clump of green in the vicinity... it's a talent (or something...)
