the best laid plans

On Saturday afternoon, after finishing the morning barn chores, gassing up the truck, hitching and packing the trailer... ponykins came in from the field with a wound on her hock. It appears to be superficial, but the area is pretty swollen and she's very sensitive about it. Trots out sound though.

All the same, though, no xc schooling for wounded ouchy mare. But hey, cold hosing is fun too, right???

On Sunday, the area was a bit more swollen and the wound was draining. Still sound, but still reason enough to cancel our dressage lesson. Instead, we did lots more cold hosing, scrubbing, and treating with various tinctures and ointments. Plus some happy pills mixed with dinner.

Fingers crossed that the swelling goes down quickly. The wound itself isn't particularly worrisome, except that it might be trying to get infected.

There's one more lesson of our planned 'big weekend' on Monday night, but I don't expect to ride in it at this point.

It's a bit disappointing, if i'm being honest. But Isabel's well-being trumps my plans & adventures every time.

But (provided Isabel heals quickly and with no complication) it means that I might drop down a level in our upcoming events since we didn't practice as much as I wanted to - and I didn't get the confidence boost that Saturday's xc school was intended to be. Why push it, right?

    1. thanks! she's uber dramatic about it... and is telling the barn manager that the wound is KILLING her... fingers crossed that it's just her drama (and not like, a compromised joint...)
